BBC Broadcasting House (phase 2 - fitout)
GRP counter tops DDA access, canopies/shrouds and themed signage wraps
The Design & Display Structures team worked closely with Howard Bros Joinery, a bespoke subcontract joinery specialist, on a project for the BBC offices in London W1.
The imaginative scheme covering seven floors required D&D to design, manufacture and install a variety of repeating GRP modular furntiure solutions in a white finish:
DDA desk extension mouldings added to glass counters in main breakout areas
3m long signage curving shrouds/canopies over breakout refreshment stations
Curved walls with weather symbols wrapping attractively around mdf resource hubs
Incorporating down lighting fittings and laser positioned water sprinkler outlets, the double skinned structural GRP shrouds rise from the rear of the refreshment stations to provide light to users. On the reverse main face moulded in recessed lettering back lit by LED boards direct visitors to the appropriate zones within the large open plan offices.
The DDA extension pieces, again to an attractive split curving design, give disabled users in wheelchairs an opportunity to draw themselves up to the refreshment area and join the activities in comfort.
The modular wraps contain a number of BBC weather graphics that are moulded into each panel. Acrylic and LED lighting behind, all made accessible for future maintenance, complete the dramatic effect.

Additional information: Striking new images of the newly developed Broadcasting House are now on full view along the hoardings at the front of the new building in Portland Place. These will be in place during the fit-out phase of the project which is being undertaken for the BBC by contractors Overbury. With the fit-out in full swing, the detailed planning for the move of over 5000 BBC journalists and support staff from Bush House and Television Centre into Europe’s biggest newsroom is well underway, in readiness for the opening in 2013, when Broadcasting House will provide a vibrant new destination for audiences and visitors.
What the papers say: The newly constructed Broadcasting House is attracting attention from the architectural and building press. A recent article in Building Magazine describes the new curved glass façade as “a subtle echo” of All Souls Church and the original Broadcasting House which is best appreciated from the southern end of Regent Street where “the new public space creates a formal glazed backdrop perfectly aligned to the central axis of both Regent Street and the church spire”. The article depicts the newsroom as the “beating heart” of the building which, when filled with BBC journalists, will become “the architectural face of the BBC” that will be seen in millions of homes across the world.
