Serpentine Sackler Gallery Hyde Park London
Double curving GRP/FRP bullnose cladding and 5m tall fluted columns
Design & Display Structures were appointed to design detail, manufacture and install one of the most complex double curving GRP bullnose cladding structures in the UK to fit around the perimeter of lightweight tensile roof membrane and primary steelwork structure which provides a new and exciting exhibition/gallery space in London.
In addition D&D provided 5 No tall fluted monolithic FRP column linings leading your gaze up into the oval glazed rooflights.
The D&D design team worked in partnership with the main contractor Galliford Try Construction, concept designers Zaha Hadid Architects (ZHA) and a team of associated specialist trades such as Architen Landrell to achieve the sweeping serpentine effect desired on this challenging renovation and development.
The modern extension was added to the west, a contemporary lightweight partner to the original building’s classical weight.
The 3D models and preliminary design details were created by our design team as they progressed towards the next phase, the slicing up of the scheme into component parts, to enable the bespoke tooling moulds to take their individual shapes.
All manufactured off site for maximum convenience, these prefinished modular cladding sections were then delivered in protective recyclable crates for fast installation.
The grand opening took place 28th September 2013.
